Contribute

Cool Kids Learn believes all students need to see themselves as part of their larger community. One of the best ways to help us bring this belief to life is to volunteer at CKL. Volunteers assist Teachers and Guides in providing a quality educational enrichment experience for students; Volunteers serve as additional adult supervision during activities and on field trips and support office-based activities e.g., parent outreach.

Chaperone

Chaperones have the opportunity to assist program employees with the supervision of children during weekly field trips throughout Miami-Dade County. Field trips occur 1 day a week at different CKL summer sites and requires a commitment of 4-5 hours for the day of the field trip. Volunteers can sign up to chaperone as many or as few activities as they choose.

Community Teacher

Community Teachers are dynamic adults who contribute their time and wisdom to teaching our students in areas of personal experience or expertise. Under the guidance of CKL staff, these volunteers design and teach mini-courses in our after-school and summer programs that introduce students to a new subject or way of thinking. Community Teachers are experienced in the subject that they wish to teach, but do not possess formal teaching credentials. From a self-taught chef leading a cooking class to a lawyer judging a mock trial, all adults have the power to teach a child something new. CKL staff works with volunteers to select and refine all mini-courses to ensure that teachers and students alike have a meaningful experience.

The time commitment to lead a mini-course varies depending on the subject matter and the Community Teacher’s preferences. Some are one-day workshops, others last a few days, still others meet every week. The standard mini-course includes a combination of presentation and instruction as well as hands-on practice. The most successful mini courses also include a demonstration of the skill learned (e.g., conduct a debate, write a business plan, publish a book) or a field-trip related to the subject matter. Past mini-courses have included mediation, investment, entrepreneurship, journalism and culinary arts. Through the Community Teachers program CKL brings together a diverse set of adult role models who have valuable career experiences and skills to share with our students. Feedback from past participants indicates that being a Community Teacher is one of the most enjoyable ways to contribute to Cool Kids Learn Inc.

Oral History Project

During the Oral History Project, conducted as part of our summer and after-school programs, students interview senior members of our community to understand the world through their personal life experiences. Students prepare for their meetings by researching the relevant historical period, developing questionnaires, interviewing seniors, taking notes and recording them to create oral histories which will later be presented to parents and the community. In this way, inter-generational connectivity is promoted as different generations learn from one another while students practice critical literacy skills.
