Board of Directors (full biographies)

John Copeland, President –The Copeland Companies

Mr. Copeland serves as President of The Copeland Companies, a real estate development company that has been responsible for multiple developments in South Florida. Before that, Mr. Copeland was a senior manager with the international management consulting firm of McKinsey & Company for more than ten years where he served Fortune 500 companies and innovative start-ups on strategy, operations and organizational issues. During his time at McKinsey, Mr. Copeland focused his practice on governments, financial institutions, and health care companies. In addition, he managed five successful education ventures.

Mr. Copeland is also on the Board of Trustees of the Public Health Trust/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Mr. Copeland received a BA from Harvard University where he is still involved with the screening of local Miami-Dade County candidates. He also holds an MBA from Stanford University with a public management/education focus.

Akiba Smith-Francis, Associate Marketing Manager - Clorox Company

Ms. Smith-Francis has had a long and varied career in community-based education and youth programming. Ms. Smith-Francis directed the Franklin Teen Mentoring Program in Boston. She also served as the co-founder and director of the Harvard University branch of Women and Youth Supporting Each Other (WYSE), and initiated development of the New York University branch of the national curriculum-based mentoring organization. Ms. Smith-Francis went on to work with the management consulting firm of McKinsey and Company, where she helped develop long-term strategies and organizational solutions for corporate and non-profit organizations. Ms. Smith-Francis holds a degree in Environmental Science and Public Policy from Harvard University as well as an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Masters degree in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

 Maria Birbili, Assistant Professor – Department of Early Childhood Education, University of Thessaloniki

Before taking her current position, Ms. Birbili was a Lecturer in Educational Research Methodology at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England and a Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at Technological Educational Institution in Athens, Greece.

Ms. Birbili is a leading thinker on creating effective strategies for early childhood education. Her research focuses on the need for multi-cultural education and effective strategies for teaching civic engagement to young children. Her latest book focuses on the use of questions as a tool for developing children's critical thinking skills. Ms. Birbili received a PhD in Educational Studies and an MSc in Educational Research Methodology from the University of Oxford and an MA in Early Childhood Education from Boston College. She has published several articles in her areas of expertise including: Early Childhood Education (2001), The Social Studies Curriculum in Early Childhood Education. (1996), The need for multicultural education (1994), A growing need for multicultural education (1993).

 Marcus Christian, Esq. – Southern District of Florida

Mr. Christian is Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. Before taking this distinguished position, Mr. Christian was the former COO of Take Stock in Children, a non profit organization that provides scholarships, mentors and hope to Florida's low-income, at-risk children.

Mr. Christian has an exceptional educational background. He earned a BA from Williams College. Mr. Christian also holds an MSc from the University of Oxford as well as a JD from Yale University.

Executive Management

Andrea Kilpatrick, President

Andrea spent eight years as a consultant with McKinsey & Company, including three years as a leader in the firm’s Nonprofit Practice. During her time at McKinsey, Andrea worked with multiple government and non-profit clients on board governance, performance management and other strategic issues. Her recent publications include: The Dynamic Board: Lessons from High-Performing Nonprofits (2004), Nonprofits’ Untapped Resource (2005) and The Power of Vision (2004). A graduate of Princeton University (BA - English and African-American Studies) and Harvard Law School (JD), Andrea also holds a Masters degree in Education from the University of Oxford, England.

Cutari Copeland, Director of Programming

Cutari spent several years in the classroom as an elementary school teacher and brings several years of experience in starting programs that help struggling students become better readers. In addition to her teaching experience, Cutari has also been a member of several school advisory committees, where she helped develop, implement, and monitor the various learning strategies needed for student achievement. Cutari attended Florida A&M University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, and St. Thomas University where she received her Master’s Degree in Education Administration.

 DeAnna Stinson, Director of Operations

DeAnna has over ten years of accounting, administrative and human resource experience from various Fortune 500 companies including Johnson & Johnson, McDonalds Corporation, Verizon Wireless and Equifax, Inc. where she specialized in the areas of audit, financial analysis, strategic planning, organization and conflict management. DeAnna is a graduate of Hampton University, School of Business and a Certified Public Accountant.

 Nicole Murphy, Director of Finance

Nicole has over ten years accounting experience including public accounting engagements for a variety of clients in the private sector, government and not-for-profit arenas. Nicole has diverse experience in accounting leadership ranging from school districts to large retailers. Nicole is a graduate of Canisius College in Buffalo, New York and is a certified public accountant.
