The CKL Academy engages students in hands-on elective coursework designed to reinforce academic foundations, build critical thinking skills and expose students to cultural, career and arts experiences. Students work with teachers and college students to master math and reading concepts through student-driven projects. By leading projects, students have the opportunity to apply their academic skills to group examination of a topic of their choosing. Students investigate topics using library or computer research, interviews, experiments and other forms of measurement. Upon project completion, students represent their findings through creative writing, model-building, performance and other methods of expression.
Students in the CKL Academy also work with Community Teachers (volunteers from the private and public sectors). Community Teachers lead experiential enrichment activities in their fields of expertise. For example, students learning about business planning and budgeting have the opportunity to build their own businesses under the guidance of a local entrepreneur. Other enrichment activities include Drama, Community Service, Chess, World Cultures, Dance and Team Sports.
